OM Malik delivers his Keynote, at India’s first WordCamp! I grew up in Rajinder nagar in Delhi I try and explain my mother what I do, and she doesn;t get it :) Om shares his story as to how he started by writing for a weekly in the US as a journalist. In ‘92 I went to the US. Somewhere in 2000-2001 timeframe I was writing a book and I discovered, I could share the process of writing a book, and I started publishing my web site. I also used to have a newsletter called “.com waala” :) At that time there wasn’t any tool except blogger, and I created a web site, called GigaOM. Every month I had 400-500 people checking it out. And for about 3-6 months I used to send e-mails, telling people to follow my stuff, and then it caught on.
In 2001 when I converted to a movable type, I found gold
Sharing started and then I wrote a little post about Narayan Murthy, in 2004-05 it was very clear to me that the community effort was much much more pwerful than my own day job. Since then, in 2006 I left my job and started this as a proper Blog publishing company. we have 7 blogs. What I think about blogging? Blog or sites or twitter or WP, whatever you call it, its like a piece of paper. You print a bill on it, it becomes a bill, you write whatever you want, and it takes that shape! You can do, whatever you feel like. It doesn’t matter, the only person it satisfies is you!
You are taking this empty CMS system, and turning it into something beautiful, may be it is just beautiful for you!!
A lot of people seem to grapple with the problems of blogging, which we will discuss over the next two days.
If you dont feel your blog is worth your time, its not worth others - is my insight into the blogging sphere
When you blog you always have to remember, there are millions others like you, whowould share, remember that you are fighting for people’s attention. You want people to read yoru stuff. You cannot get lazy about blogging! Not for a day, not for a month! Making a quick buck is not the reason why you should just blog. You should be paasionate about it. You should be able to Love it. It should be your calling, to stand out! If you find one more person to read you, you are successful. And we are going up with the first session :) SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
